Basketball - Simsbury Youth Basketball Register View Cart

Basketball in hoop.

Simsbury High School Girls Varsity basketball coach Sam Zullo and his staff and players will be leading these great new programs focusing on techniques and mastering the fundamentals of the game.

Each program is designed for the beginner through experienced player who wants to build on their shooting, ball handling, passing, defense and rebounding skills through quality instruction, drills, scrimmages and games. The program creates a safe, fun and confidence building atmosphere through encouragement, teamwork, sportsmanship and respect.

Participants should wear shorts or sweatpants, sneakers, bring plenty of water and a basketball (please write names on all equipment!). These programs will all be held at HJMS.

Parent volunteers will be needed to act as coaches, and all volunteers will go through a coaching clinic with Coach Zullo before the season begins. Anyone who is interested in volunteering, please email Taryn Schrager at tschrager@simsbury-ct.gov so that a list can be created. If a minimum number of volunteers is not met for each program, that program will be cancelled.

REGISTRATION MUST BE COMPLETED NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 15TH (unless programs reach capacity prior to that date).

The parent volunteer clinic will be held prior to the season starting
 - you will be emailed with more information.

  • All participants will receive a t-shirt.
  • An instructional, co-ed program that teaches the fundamentals of basketball to young players using a variety of fun drills and activities designed to improve skills. Space is limited so register early.

Beginner Basketball Leagues (Grades 3 & 4)
  • This year our 3rd and 4th grade program is going to be a 3 v 3 based program for the girls and a 5 v 5 based program for the boys. Kids will be placed on different teams each week of the season and will learn how to play with different concepts and skills each week. Records will be kept throughout the season and used to help determine some final teams for a big tournament during the last couple of weeks of the winter season. Parent volunteer coaches are still needed as much as ever to help teach the right skills! You won't have your own 'team' throughout the winter but will be able to help instruct our sessions. Wednesday practices will be held and skills will be taught during those practices as well.
  • Practices will be held on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 for the boys and 6:30 - 7:30 for the girls. Practices will focus on teaching different skills. The format each week will depend on the number of attendees but this approach will allow us to be very flexible in what we do. The volunteer coaches that are able to attend on Wednesdays will be given a template by Coach Zullo to help guide the night.
  • Games will be held Saturday mornings at HJMS, starting November 17th. There will be no basketball on November 24, December 1, December 8, December 22 or December 29.
  • All participants will receive a t-shirt.
  • Beginner Basketball is designed for boys and girls in grades 3 and 4. Practices and games are used as opportunities to learn basic rules of basketball and develop skills in an encouraging environment. Coaches and officials will use teachable moments to help players learn rules and develop good sportsmanship practices while gaining skills and making new friends. Players are randomly selected to teams. Requests for specific teammates will not be honored.
